The Noble Struggle
by
H. Vanoy Barton
We conquered the darkness. A thought, a postulate - a try, a fail, then another try. The cycle repeated. At last, a
flicker: a flame. A fire. Darkness retreated, warmth expanded. A huddling place began. We sat together. Fearful eyes
stared menacingly at us from the darkness beyond our huddle, daring us to give up the flame. We learned. We grew. A
primal fear was conquered. Let there be light in the night.
With the pushing back of the dark and the imagined demons dwelling therein, communication increased, ideas were
exchanged. Whereas before, night was spent in uneasy, watchful and fitful sleep, the blaze offered hope of a peaceful
sleep - a better tomorrow. Fire brought togetherness which, in turn, fathered and fostered knowledge and community.
The community tended and nurtured the fire. To do less would mean a return to the dark. And the fear and ignorance
dwelling therein.
The Internet is the fire of our age. The blaze of the packets we send each other shed light where once there was dark.
We are breaking down the walls, the barriers, the obstacles, the imagined demons of separation, difference, and
ignorance others of our kind have placed in our way. We are communicating as a species for the first time in our
history.
Let us tend this new fire, this new chance, and nurture it - lest the darkness return
Think about it!
