Major Finer, who is the commander
of the Massachusetts National Guard’s 181st Infantry Battalion, was the leader
of Task Force Yankee, which was mobilized on September 3rd, 2005 for the purpose
of providing humanitarian support, security, search and rescue operations to the
citizens of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
As
Commander, Major Finer led more than 500 soldiers and airmen in a 1,500 mile
journey from Massachusetts to New Orleans with only enough supplies and
equipment that they could carry on their backs and in about 10 vehicles.
During their deployment, the soldiers and airmen of Task Force Yankee
assisted more than 2,600 citizens in their Civilian Assistance Center, rescued
200 pets, and evacuated approximately 150 citizens. Major Finer, who was
partially responsible for rescuing a 71-year-old World War II veteran who had
survived 18 days in his attic with no food and just a few jugs of drinking
water, appeared on Good Morning America and was featured in The New York Times,
Boston Herald, Worcester Telegram, and Swampscott Reporter.
